I firmly believe in the international justice systems to resolve disputes related to foreign direct investment and transnational transactions. For more than 18 years, I have been advising clients and investors in disputes submitted to international arbitration and before sovereign states, with the aim of achieving the best defense of their rights far from their national jurisdictions.
My profile as a lawyer is eminently international. In addition to being a registered lawyer in Spain, I'm a solicitor admitted to practice in England and Wales and have a master's degree in law from McGill University (Montreal, Quebec). I have worked, among others, on matters subject to public international law, English, Swedish, Argentine, Philippine, Guatemalan law and principles of lex mercatoria. In addition to Spain, I have also practiced in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. I speak fluent Spanish, English and French.
In recent years I have specialised in investment arbitrations under the Energy Charter Treaty, representing German, Swiss, Luxembourg, English and Japanese investors in claims arising from damages to renewable projects. Several of the proceedings in which I participated ended with awards recognising the plaintiff investors' right to receive millions in compensation and, more importantly, declaring that the damages suffered by their investments were illegitimate at the international level, despite having been validated from an internal level by national courts.
During my years of arbitration practice I have been a member as a lawyer of several arbitration groups of large Spanish and foreign firms, as well as working with some of the best and most reputable international arbitrators. I have also acted for a brief period as counsel to an international arbitration court. This has allowed me to develop and perfect, over time, a specialisation in the practice of international litigation and an understanding of the predominant legal culture in this type of matters.
As a Spanish-speaking lawyer, Latin America is a focus of particular attention and interest. During the last few years, I have spent long periods in Costa Rica, focused on the resolution of trade and investment disputes in Central America.
